Spain – Greece Skype activity

And it worked!!! Last Friday, February 15^th, the third level pupils of 2^nd Primary school of Aghia Varvara communicated through Skype with the Spanish pupils from third level of Primary education (10-12 years old) of Echo school.  Both sides have prepared a guessing game to play during the activity. Spanish pupils have prepared ten animal riddles that the Greek pupils had to guess and the Greek pupils have prepared 10 riddles about school objects. When the kids finished their guessing game, it was time for the teachers to play!!! Each teacher had a riddle for the other one to find. The activity lasted an hour and everybody enjoyed it. It was an amazing experience for both pupils and teachers.  Teachers think that we should give our students the opportunity to use real English with a communicative purpose as well as give them the opportunity of knowing other European pupils. Go for it…

Our canteen

Usually, we eat in "the inn-restaurant of the village" but they are on holidays for january and february, then it is parents who make the meals alternatly for the children who remain to eat at the school. Recently, we even ate at the teacher's :-)

Tuesday : chicken-"gratin Dauphinois"- crumble- bread

Thursday : meat with french beans- bread with goat cheese- fruits

Friday : sausages with rice- yaourth and fruits

My name is Peter Hajšel. I was born in Banská Štiavnica and almost all my life (except my study and a few other years) I have been living here. Although I know well some other Slovak towns  I love my native town with its monumental history and sober present. Banská Štiavnica for her silver  and gold mining in the Middle Ages was called „golden town“. Our town with its splendid  Holy Trinity Square,  narrow picturesque streets and alleyways, with five churches, New and Old Castles, The baroque Calvary and many other historical sights is fascinating place.

My working days are very different. On Monday and on Thursday  I have got four lessons, on Tuesday and on Friday three lessons  and on Wednesday I have got five. Every day except Tuesday I am in the school library. Here I am with the pupils who are interested in literature or information on Internet. When I am not very busy I can help them with their homework. The opening hours of our library are suitable for our children and there are from 1.30 pm. to 3.30 pm.

My profiled school subjects which I teach are English language, History, Social science and partly ICT. I like teaching English very much but to be honest,  the strongest passion of me  is for History. Some my pupils take part in regional historical Olympiad and I am often proud of them. For many pupils is English enough complicated but on the other hand many of them  are very hardworking. Two of them – Katka and Hanka -  were within our Project in Poland last  days of January.

Our school day is organized this way. We start at 7.45 am. The lesson lasts 45 minutes. The short breaks are 10 minutes long, after second lesson is 15 minutes break for elevenses (or second breakfast) and after 6th lesson is 25 minutes long break for lunch and having a rest. The teachers  carry out their duties like supervisors during the breaks. There are many leisure activities (interest groups) during the afternoons  at our school.

Although I am originally librarian, my profession of teacher gives me satisfaction.

A DAY AT SCHOOL

Good morning! I am in a hurry to have my morning cup of coffee. I know – my students wait for me. Some of them always get to school before me.  I look around approaching the building. Someone overtakes and says “hello” to me. And … at the corner of the school they run towards me whooping!

In front of the school I form them in column and we make for the classroom together. My head is already full of information after we climb the stairs to the third floor: who has a new pair of trainers, who is going to have a journey during the weekend, which has a new pet. I can’t succeed to answer all their questions they ask that make me feel like I am under fire.

We have 10 minutes to settle down to start the first lesson. I have to prepare the board and the poster couth everything necessary for the classes. My students put their things in order, getting ready for work. Oh, I can’t miss that minute when I go to the staff room to take my class’ register and share first greetings and jokes with my colleagues /a moment that  depends on my day/.

Every day we have 5 lessons /each lasts 40 minutes/ with short 10 minutes breaks. After the second lesson, during the break my students are in the canteen, having their free breakfast. At 12:10 I see some of the kids off. They go home, have lunch and get ready for the next day with their parents and relatives. The rest of the students have to do that at school with their educator in the afternoon.

What am I faced with from here up to the end of my working day? A gathering to discuss all the current, immediate tasks and aims; allocation of duties in touch with the school project; checking my student’s notebooks; getting ready for the next day…

I don’t get home at the same time every day. Some time I have a cup of coffee with my mates, talking again about moments from our working day. That is in my mind walking on my way home, having dinner with my family and even when I am falling asleep…

But I know for certain: I have a profession, that never left me feel bored or lose the meaning of my life!
